for Liz from Abby Wolfe

For Liz -

Liz is doing her first ceramics project using flat 4 inch by 4 inch slabs of clay in the shape of puzzle pieces. She plans on suspending each piece by the ceiling in the ceramics studio critique room, using heavy fishing line. Instead of putting up each puzzle piece randomly, she plans on making a 3 piece by 3 piece square with 9 puzzle pieces, with 4 big blocks altogether. Liz explained to me that she wants to explore the shadows that the puzzle pieces create when light hits them. She will use black under glaze, finishing it off with clear shiny glaze that will contrast with the white walls, but shine with minimal light in the dark. She also stated that she does not want the puzzle pieces to interlock, but look like they could fit together.

I really like Liz’s idea of playing with the shadow concept, but would maybe suggest putting the puzzle pieces in different fields…not all in one block like a two-dimensional piece suspended in the air.
